Contra-Bandy ch11The first thing I did was drag Shawn to his room. It was a lot cleaner than mine, but I spent more time at my desk than anywhere else, so that was all right. He had a bookcase, and I felt guilty for all the times I'd accused him of not being able to read. He was heavy, and he'd lost his socks as I'd dragged him in, so getting him into his bed was going to pose something of a Gordian knot. And there I was without a sword or any other obvious cheat. For a second I considered sitting on the desk chair or leaning against the wall to catch my breath, but then Shawn let out a sleepy sigh and the warm booze-stinked breath gave me every reason to drop him instead. But I just held my own not-boozey breath and trudged toward the bed. If I tripped and fell on it, I'd kill myself. I could just bite my own tongue and have it over with
except I didn't have any kids yet. Damn. And there was no qui
Hollowmark and Lovelace 9Chapter Nine:January 17th(?): Checking UpFor the first time since we'd met Dannon, I was able to sleep in 'til ten o'clock. I didn't realize I had until I fell out of bed and landed on my alarm clock. One of the stupid-looking bells cut into my bare neck. I mouthed a curse and shoved it under the bed. Suddenly it seemed like a really awful idea, keeping an old-fashioned alarm clock. My fault probably, I'd broken the small plastic box-y one
There was no one else in the room, except for Petersen, who was engrossed in improving his haunt. The laptop hummed almost pleasantly. I pushed my hair out of my eyes, trying to slow my heart down and stop the bleeding. It felt like a rather nasty paper-cut, but I couldn't see it to gauge the size or severity. Difficult to look at one's own neck, especially after just waking up.I got up and staggered into the bathroom and fulfilled a rat
Hollowmark and Lovelace 8Chapter Eight:January 15th: Interim and the ChangesSeven hours of sleep was not ever enough. I rolled onto my other side and nearly broke my nose on the wall. There wasn't enough room for me in my own bed, was there? I slapped the wall as if that might make it move a bit."Get up, already! I think I've conscripted most of your laundry trying to wake you up
"Curse whoever had made Dannon our roommate. Straight to the most literal of blazes with them, I say. "Bugger off." The words weren't afforded much oomph, as my face was still half in the wall, half in the pillow. The little sod had the most annoying habit of waking up before eight o'clock. And he thought he had the right to call other people insane. He also, apparently, got lonely. That is, he insisted on my being awake whenever he was, which meant that I'd been getting far less sleep than a man ought.
Hollowmark and Lovelace 7Chapter Seven:January 11th: UpstairsThe floorboards creaked ominously as we navigated around the holes. Some were smaller than a golf ball, but others could have easily let an encyclopedia through. Either to brag wordlessly or to make the going easier on us livies, Joseph went right through the middle of the hall, where the floor was in the worst condition. I gripped the banister and made my way very slowly. I hardly dared so much as check on Dannon's progress. If I had made the mistake of offering assistance, he almost certainly would have bitten my hand off at the wrist. I could hear him swearing under his breath, along with a few bizarrely worded prayers that seemed to be cursing God rather than requesting aide.As we neared the nursery door, I began to wonder if vomiting onto the ground floor would have any effect on the stability of the second. I had a weak stomach at the best of times, and right now was as
