As an exploration of how much my writing has changed over the past (almost) nine years, here is a snippet from a story that I wrote when I was fifteen, followed by that same snipppet rewritten very recently.
::-::

Suddenly there was a loud and vicious snarl. Everyone jumped up and stared at the door, which seemed to be the only barrier between them and the…whatever it was. Jason searched his pockets for a few moments and retrieved a large rock. Before anyone could protest, he dashed to the door and opened it.

Gasps and utterances of disgust and surprise heralded the unveiling of the gruesome creature in the doorway. It looked like a pile of blue ooze with flecks of red and orange. It had no claws or teeth, or even eyes for that matter. But the stench of the beast was staggering. It smelled as though someone had gathered together every offensive odor in existence.

~~~
A vicious snarl cut through the happy chatter in the room like a knife dropped onto a glass floor.  No one seemed capable of staying in their seat, except one or two party guests who sat paralyzed in shock and growing fear.  They all stared at the door, some inching away from it, others creeping towards it.  Whatever had announced its presence was on the other side of the suddenly far too thin, far too breakable plank of fashioned wood.
Hands searching the pockets of his ridiculous vest for anything he could even pretend was a weapon, Jason strode purposefully towards the door.  Deep down, he knew he looked very silly, but he hoped that everyone was too frightened to notice it much.  His fingers closed around a jagged rock that was almost too big for the pocket he found it in.  It caught on the fabric as he pulled it out, but he felt better once he had it in hand.  He opened the door.
The others who, like him, had approached the door, swore under their breath and covered their noses, some going so far as to back away rather quickly.  Jason pinched his own nose and stared at the gelatinous mound of pulsating life that undulated on the welcome mat.  It smelled like vomit that had been allowed to rot in the center of a garbage dump, but it looked like someone had had the rather cheerful idea of bringing blue and green jelly preserves to life.
Except when it burbled and spat tiny jets of noxious liquid.
Talking to Casey yesterday about this (which is when I wrote that second snip), and now I'm going to be mildly vain by popping it into my gallery. MAN WAS I AWFUL BACK THEN. lol and other dumb things to say.
Still, we march along. It's really nothing to be proud of, progressing this much in the space of a near-decade, but at least I did progress.
Jason is actually in a tail-end story that comes after all of the nine stories in my Journeys series. So he'll reappear sometime after my second son turns four. ;p Possibly with a new name that works better.
