My head was killing me, and my hands felt as if I'd stuck both of them into a garbage disposal. I moaned into the coarse pillow and tried to smother myself. My whole face felt dry and stretched, as if I had the mother of all sunburns. And the inner curve of my elbows both felt bruised. For a second I was certain that I'd fallen out of bed, then discarded that notion on the basis that I still had a pillow as well as an itchy blanket underneath me. Apparently I'd been too keen on my nap to get under the covers.

"It's about time you came around."

I shot upright, then had to bite back a cry of pain. "Jimmy?!"

Chapter Thirty-Three:
In Which Travis Is Cautious and Rather Intelligent (and then a little brave and stupid)

That morning, Travis awoke to find the cottage oddly empty. Usually he could hear Ayleigh downstairs making breakfast, or hitting the ceiling with a broomstick to make him get out of bed if it was a school day. Maybe now that Damien was back, they were talking in the library, or something more private. Travis made a face. He still wasn't fond of the idea, but he was probably going to have to get used to it.

In Which Travis Is Having Trouble Adjusting

He touched his swelling eye and cursed. Boy, was he going to catch it when he finally got home. They'd ganged up on him this time, the ill-begotten snobs. Travis had lost fights before, but they'd always been against much more impressive opponents, not Imner Wendelbie and his stupid little friends. In Travis's defense, he'd always had a sword or two before. He wasn't much with his fists, and for the first time in a long while, he was painfully aware of how skinny and uncoordinated he was.

Chapter Twenty-Five:
In Which Travis Is Much Braver and Even Stupider

As Orah's body folded and shrunk into the form of a distressed toad, Travis felt a long resounding cry tear free of him, yet he made no sound. He snatched his sword off of the ground and advanced on the fairy godmother without a thought as to what an idiotic thing he was doing.

A blast of crackling energy caught him in his recently healed shoulder, knocking him back into a tree. Orah croaked in alarm, but he waved her off. He couldn't let anything else happen to her.

"Change her back!" he shouted, before he'd even gotten back to his feet.

"Tell me where Damien is!"

Chapter Twenty-One:
In Which Travis is Brave, i.e., Stupid

Seeing Damien roughing Tag around made Travis want to hit him, but there wasn't time for that now, and it looked as if he had a plan. Travis settled for subtly pulling Orah deeper into the protection of the alley, and was only a little surprised when she didn't step on his foot.

"What's it? What are you on about?" Tag certainly didn't seem to mind being jerked around like a little girl's doll, unless he was just being too polite to show it.

"The bag of devouring!" Damien said, nearly squeaking again. "It can eat the edicada, right?"

Never could master blowing up those kinds of b'lloons...my cheeks were invariabley the first things to puff and expand...with the b'loon mocking me all the while.
