Benjamin Barrett -rough- by Kid-Apocalypse Benjamin Barrett -rough- by Kid-Apocalypse
Had to prove that I don't completely SUCK.

....didn't really, but at least I got that doodle scanned and cleaned up. That's two things I can take off the shoutboard...when I feel like it...

His face is completely wrong and his hair isn't curly enough, so I'll have another go with him. Eventually.

Oh, I wish I could say so... I used the digital watercolors in Painter.

What!!? WHAT?? *dashes back for another look* ***envy***
Darn my impatience...I gave up on the watercolor selections a long time ago, because I couldn't get the hang of it right away.

They're actually quite nice if you're in a hurry--at least, the way I use them. I just use them to lay down the basic color I want, then use...well, the exact same color over them for shadows and pretend highlights don't matter.

Well, you just use the white of the background for highlights, of course...do you layer them? ie photoshop type layer...:?

Yeah, the white comes out through the base "coat". Actually, I use the same layer, unless I can't get the shadows the way I want them or I want to be sure certain colors won't blend (sometimes working with a smaller picture, a character's face and hair might be on different layers), and then I experiment.

I haven't done it when I had a background yet, but since I sometimes "clean" the edges by using the water color eraser so colors don't go outside my lines, I could probably use the lasso and fill tool, or just a huge pen to color the character white at Canvas level and let the background do what it likes.

...now I'm going to have to dink with watercolors again. I should look at the Painter 9 as well. My original program is having more and more glitches occur, and I don't know if it's a technical thing, and if removing it and reloading it would cure the problem or what...prolly mostly or what.

Oyshe, that sucks! I've only noticed one bug in Painter 9, that it crashes completely when you use the selection tool too much. So I just save often and always right before I use the selection tool.
